10 Ways to Use Righteous Roots Hair Rx Oil For Growing Long Healthy Curly Hair

Righteous Roots Hair Rx Oil

Hello there! Welcome back to another product review on The Curious Jalebi! In this section, I review different hair products to see how it works on wavy, curly hair since our natural texture behaves differently than our straighter compatriots. We also have unique, multiple requirements. Chances are if you’re here, you’re wondering if this Righteous Roots Hair Rx Oil helps to

  1. Reduce hairfall
  2. Speed up hair growth
  3. Reduce dryness and frizz
  4. Increase shine in your waves and curls
  5. Reduce breakage

This oil is a blend of 11 different oils (a mix of carrier & essential oils) and has taken over the natural hair care community on Instagram. Find my review, the answers to the questions above & 10 ways how you can use Righteous Roots Hair Rx Oil (or any other oil too for that matter) on your wavy and curly hair.

But first, let’s start with asking- how is an essential oil different versus other kinds for hair care? Why are they mixed?

Difference Between Essential Oils Versus Other Oils

Many of you have asked me the difference in using essential oils as compared to cold-pressed or natural oils for hair care on my Instagram. Check out the below infographic which I’ve made to make it simpler for you to understand!

Difference between essential oils and carrier oils

Now that that’s clear, let’s get to the review!

Righteous Roots Hair Rx Oil Ingredients

Righteous Roots Hair Rx Oil Ingredients

  1. 100% Pure Black Jamaican Castor Oil
Considered to be more potent that normal castor oil because of it’s high omega-6 fatty acids and ash content (comes due to roasting of the beans), Pure Black Jamaican Castor oil has been used for centuries by women for healing their scalp, reducing hair loss, strengthening hair & increasing shine. JBCO, as it is popularly called also has high glycerine content so it moisturises hair as well.  If you are suffering from an itchy scalp, fungal infections or sensitivity, keep this oil in your kit!
  2. Organic Virgin Coconut Oil
Why does some people’s hair break more easily? It could be due to protein loss, not drinking enough water & not having a diet filled with good fats & nutrients. In this study, it was found that Coconut oil was the only oil that prevented protein loss! Lauric acid that forms Coconut oil was light enough to actually penetrate hair strands to nourish them from within. Say hello to shine, hydration, reduced hair fall & breakage! Do note that some curlies don’t take well to coconut so keep that in mind. 🙂

  3. Tea Tree Oil
If the words antibacterial, antimicrobial, antiseptic, antiviral, fungicide, insecticide don’t reveal the strength of this oil, I don’t know what will! It’s almost magical disinfectant properties has been used over centuries as a medicine. If you suffer from dandruff, red itchy bumps or fungal infections, or even acne – you have to try this oil! If you’re also someone who doesn’t want to suffer the drying effects of a medicated, anti-dandruff/anti fungal shampoo, this ingredient should help. Also, I think it contributes to the yummy, therapeutic smell of the oil. The smell even clears up my nose when I had a cold!
  4. Unrefined Organic Sesame Oil
You won’t find many South Indian homes without ‘Til oil’ or Gingelly oil, other popular names for Sesame. My mother has always been a huge fan, mixing it for our weekly hair oil massages. (Drop me a comment if you were chased by your mum in childhood for such massages 😆) Not only does it’s antimicrobial properties help in keeping a clean scalp free from any infection, it also protects our hair from UV Rays & environmental damage due to pollution.

  5. Argan Oil
Native to morocco, this oil has recently become incredibly popular across the globe. It is also called ‘Liquid Gold’ & beats even coconut oil in the amount of Vitamin E it has! This antioxidant helps hair to grow faster, reduces damage by UV Rays and environmental pollutants & also helps reduce split ends. It’s also prefect to fight frizz without feeling your hair is weighed down.
  6. Jojoba Oil
The texture & make-up of our scalp’s natural sebum is very similar to Jojoba oil. It works great as a moisturiser if you suffer from a really dry scalp. Even if you suffer from an oily one, Jojoba is great at removing sticky build-up too, helping you keep your scalp clean and healthy.
  7. Additional Natural Organic Oils
The company hasn’t revealed the remaining four oils yet on account of acquiring a patent and trying to protect their recipe. I’ve recently heard they got one so I’ll update this space when I do! If you’re also worried about any allergy to any ingredient, shoot them a message on Instagram!

How is Righteous Roots Hair Rx Oil Different From Other Oils

Righteous Roots Hair Rx Oil

  1. Righteous Roots Hair Rx Oil is not one oil, but a pre-formulated mix that the owner of the company has been using for her naturally curly hair. She has chosen these oils after years of experimenting.
  2. Even though it has so many oils I personally don’t find it too thick to use! It washes away easily unlike pure castor oil or coconut oil.
  3. The scent is frakking (Any Battlestar Galactica fans among you? 😄) fantastic! Despite having different oils, it leaves me really happy when I use this oil.

10 Ways to Use Righteous Roots Hair Rx Oil

How to Use Righteous Roots Hair Rx Oil

1. Scalp Massages

Because of the shape of the nozzle, you can apply this oil to your hair directly! I love how that minimises waste. After applying a few drops to different sections of your scalp, use your finger tips to massage your scalp for a few minutes. Not only is this relaxing, it also increases blood circulation in your scalp. This helps more nutrients to reach your scalp and grow new hair strands. This is best done regularly or frequently – many do it just before sleeping.

2. Inversion Scalp Method

A rising trend in the natural hair care world, this method requires you to flip your head down and then give it a massage. Instead of reading more text, watch the video below – The Green Beauty Channel has become my go -to in the last few months on decoding the science behind hair care techniques. SO well explained! The science student in me still lives, who knew 😁?

3. Champi

If you’re Indian, I don’t need to explain this to you, do I? 😎 It’s basically drenching your hair in oil; scalp, the whole length, everything, and keeping it for a few hours/overnight. I usually do this once a month when I know I have to use a medicated shampoo the next day or clarify with a sulphate shampoo.

4. Split Ends

If you’re hair is long like mine, chances are it will get tangled more easily, rub against your t shirt and other fabrics & develop split ends. Once you have split ends, you can’t ‘un-split’ it. You have to cut it off. Instead, reduce the chances by applying a small amount of Righteous Roots Hair Rx Oil to your ends after you style. It will reduce friction and keep the ends healthy. This is especially important because of our curl pattern- our natural oil from the scalp doesn’t reach the ends because of the spiral structure.

5. Deep Conditioning

Whenever you deep condition, either by using a DIY mix or a store bought conditioner, add a few drops to it and then apply it on your hair. I’ve seen better results with mixing oil than without it.

You can read more about deep conditioning in this post : Deep Conditioning For Curly Hair – What, When, How

6. Steaming

After oiling lightly, use steam to open your hair shaft so that the oil can penetrate your curls better. You can do this by either covering your hair with a cholestrol heat cap or wrapping a hot towel around a normal shower cap. This is great for low porosity hair!

7. Pre Poo

Apply Righteous Roots Hair Rx Oil lightly on your scalp and hair 15-30 minutes before washing. This is what I normally due when I’m short on time. Even 15 -20 minutes of letting this oil soak into your hair will protect your hair from the drying effects of shampoo.

8. Detangle before shower

I always recommend combing curly hair wet with some conditioning product applied since that works best for natural hair. But it can’t be denied that our hair is weakest when it’s wet. If your hair is really long, or it is still transitioning with rough, dry strands, apply the oil from mid-length to your ends & use your fingers or a wide-toothed comb to detangle before you shower. This will decrease tension on your hair strands in the shower.

9. Separating Curl Clumps

A great way to make your curls look thicker is to reduce the size of the curl clumps. Doing it with dry hands can create a lot of frizz so instead, add the oil to your palms and rub to spread evenly. Then gently separate the strands.

10. SOTC- Scruch Out The Crunch

If you apply gels on your curly hair like me, please know that getting a cast & slight crunchiness after your hair dries is normal. To break this cast and make it softer, simply take a few drops of the oil in your palms and scrunch up like this. Voila! Frizz free, soft, shiny curls! Watch my video below to see how I do it.

Caution

I’ve never used this after co-washing since I don’t co wash, but I’ve heard it’s light enough to wash it off.

Also, if you have severe dandruff issues, I strongly suggest you don’t leave any oil in your scalp too long since that can actually increase flaking. That doesn’t mean you avoid oiling but limit the time you keep it on.

Results

As for any of you asking – Did it help grow your hair? Yes, but my speed of hair growth is, touchwood, quite fast already.

I owe a big part of that to genetics and a diet filled with meat, fish, eggs!

For me, the oil helped in reducing frizz, breakage & added hydration and shine!

To all my readers who ask how my hair is so shiny- it’s because I’ve been regularly using Righteous Roots Hair Rx Oil to SOTC and protect my ends!

But Pallavi, Can’t I Just Mix These Oils on My Own?

Yes, you can. If you love DIY, add whichever oils you’d like to find what suits you. But remember, you still don’t know the last four oils this company has used & neither do you know the proportion used of each. Also, if like me you’re struggling for time and prefer ready-made products to keep your hair healthy, get this instead.

What This Oil WON’T DO

This is REALLY IMPORTANT. I’ve had many readers come to recently, saying that even after using this oil, they still have hair fall. This oil WON’T WORK IF:

  1. You have nutritional deficiencies like poor haemoglobin levels, vitamins, proteins and nutrients. These vital elements help to create hair strands. How will topical treatments work when your body is not healthy from the inside?
  2. You have hormonal issues like Thyroid, PCOD etc. In this case, first get advice from your doc on any medicines you can take to normalise hair fall.
  3. You’re incredibly stressed or have recently been depressed or ill. I had crazy hair fall after my father passed away and it got better only after 6-7 months. No amount of oiling or products worked to reduce it. It’s best to give yourself some time and see a doctor.
  4. You’ve recently given birth to your kid. Post partum hair fall is normal and will improve itself on it’s own with time.

Also, EVERYONE has hair fall. Losing up to 100-150 strands a day is considered normal. And since we wavy and curly girls wash/comb our hair only every 3-4 days, there is a lot of unshed hair that suddenly falls. And it merely looks like a lot! If you to test this out, reduce your wash days and see the difference!
