Who Else Wants Weightless Curls with Maximum Definition? Curl Mix Wash-N-Go Set Review (Protein Free)

Curl Mix Results Featured Image

I remember seeing posts on Curl Mix ages ago on Youtube, watching people make curly hair products at home from the ingredients in the box they’d sent to your doorstop.

I wished such membership boxes would start in India too – lord know how quickly the demand is growing here!

Little did I know that one day I’d get to partner with this brand as an Indian curly hair blogger! 🙂

For some time now (since mid November), I’ve been testing and trying the Curl Mix Avocado Moisturiser (leave in conditioner) and Curl Mix Flaxseed Gel to see how it works on loose curls like mine, what quantity will suit what texture type etc just so this post can work as a primer and guide to anyone who wants to buy the Curl Mix products or has already bought one but doesn’t know how best to use it.

In this blog post you will find a video tutorial with these products, my notes on ingredients, pros and cons and even the right hair type. You will know exactly how to make it work on YOUR naturally wavy or curly hair.

Let’s begin! (Pin the image below to save this post!)

About Curl Mix

Curl Mix started out as a DIY subscription kit where you combine and create hair & body products at home from natural ingredients like avocados, sheabutter and flaxseeds. Some of them became so popular that they evolved to become the products I’m now reviewing!

It was founded by Kim and Tim Lewis, from Chicago, Illinois. Kim saw how curly women loved creating safe, chemical free products at home and came up with this monthly box.

Now they have body butters, hair oils and of course, their most loved combinations of Flaxseed Gel and Avocado moisturisers (leave in conditioners).

Curl Mix Pure Avocado Moisturizer with Organic Rosehip for Repairing Hair & Rose Fragrance Review

What is it

A leave in conditioner to moisturise dry, thirsty curly hair and leave it shiny and frizz-free.

Description

Our moisturizer was handpicked by our CurlMixers. They say that this is the best moisturizer that they’ve ever used. Their biggest complaint was having to share it with the rest of their family.

The key ingredient is Avocado Butter, which has conditioning qualities and a rich, buttery-soft texture, that nourishes and hydrates. The Avocado fruit contains oils rich in unsaturated fatty acids, vitamins A, B, C and E, proteins, lecithin, and potassium. From curly to kinky women, CurlMixers LOVE the hydration they get from using this Pure Avocado Moisturizer.

The next key ingredient is Organic Rosehip Oil. It is packed with essential vitamins (A,C,E) and fatty acids that aid in repairing hair. They help to renew damaged hair follicles and remedy scalp issues to promote hair growth. It is very light, and one of its main benefits is how easily it is absorbed into the scalp, deeply penetrating, moisturizing and softening the skin; which sets the perfect environment for growth.

You’ll also smell like a bouquet of roses!

Details

  • Quantity: 8oz
  • Texture: Creamy and slippery
  • Slip: Intense!
  • Price: 25$
  • Shelf Life: 1 Year

Ingredients

Distilled Water, Avocado Butter, Organic Rosehip Oil, Organic Vegetable Glycerin, Organic Guar Gum, Behentrimonium Chloride (naturally derived from colza oil), Optiphen PLUS Preservative (Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol, Sorbic Acid), Fragrance (Phthalate Free), Citric Acid

How to Use

  1. Start with freshly cleansed, conditioned hair.
  2. Separate hair into sections and flip your head over.
  3. Smooth on a dollop of the Curl Mix Avocado Moisturiser for each section with ‘Praying Hands’ (Watch video tutorial to learn)
  4. Remember the amount will vary according to your natural hair texture and thickness. For wavy hair use less, for tighter curls use more! If you apply too much it can make your hair look slightly oily. Remember a small amount goes a long way.
  5. Use your fingers to ‘Rake’ the product in or ‘work’ it in.
  6. Then use a Denman brush to distribute the product better and to define the curls.
  7. Use the Denman brush with the twisting motion at the end (shown in the video tutorial) to get FAT, THICK (calm down, I’m talking about hair :P) clumps! It’s like getting finger coiling results with a brush!
  8. If you have wavy hair, don’t rake or comb after applying the cream, just smooth it on and move to applying the gel.
  9. P.S- If you wavy hair or very loose curls, you can skip this product completely and move on to just the Flaxseed Gel. Details on it further below.
  10. If you don’t want to apply the gel and use it alone then skip to the step 11.
  11. Take sections of your hair and scrunch up to squeeze out excess product and to encourage curl formation.
  12. Repeat with a t-shirt.
  13. Air dry or diffuse.

Curl Mix Pre styling

Pros

  • Hand-made, Vegan, Cruelty-free & Organic
  • No pthalates, sulphates, parabens, formaldehydes & silicones making it not only CG-Friendly but a super clean ingredient list
  • Minimal ingredients
  • PROTEIN FREE! Which makes it great for low porosity curls or anyone who is sensitive to proteins.
  • Highly Moisturising because of avocado butter, rosehip oil and vegetable glycerine
  • Rose hip oil is packed with essential vitamins and fatty acids that helps repair damaged hair and scalp to promote hair growth. It is also lighter than other oils but penetrates the hair & skin well to help you with your #longhairgoals.
  • Behentrimonium Chloride makes hair very soft.
  • Leaves curls very shiny & frizz free.
  • Gives weightless bouncy curls (as long as you use the right amount).
  • Incredible for detangling tiny, stubborn knots. The slip in incredible.
  • You need a small amount for each section which will make the product last a long time! It justifies the cost if you are concerned.
  • Smells like rose – the king I liked! I’d tried the Rose line from Suchi some time back and didn’t like it at all so I was nervous about this scent. Turns out I didn’t need to be!

Cons

  • Can leave hair slightly oily if you use too much of it. A little goes a long way, remember that. Always use less of this and more of the gel if you find your curls getting flat faster.

Best For

Anyone who wants to treat sun-damaged, heat-damaged or just very dry wavy curly hair. This is also perfect for people who find their hair knots up very easily, or kids who need to comb their hair often but struggle because of their natural hair. This will make detangling a dream.

Would recommend it for both wavy and curly hair that needs some tlc but more so for tighter curls like mine and more. Wavies will need to adjust the amount. I also think for wavy and loose textures, the gel is actually the better bet of the two!

  • Texture: Slimy, goopy like DIY Flaxseed gel but slipperier!
  • Slip: It’s easily the most slippage I’ve ever seen in a styler.
  • Price: 28$
  • Shelf Life: 1 Year

Ingredients-

Distilled Water, Organic Brown Flaxseeds, Aloe Vera Gel, Organic Rosehip Oil, Marshmallow Root Extract, Vegetable Glycerin, Xanthan Gum, Vitamin E (Tocopheryl Acetate), Preservative (Optiphen PLUS), Fragrance, Citric Acid

How to Use

  1. If you wavy hair, rinse off your conditioner with a method called Squish to Condish.
  2. Flip your head over and divide into 2-3 sections.
  3. Then on damp hair, smooth on a nice generous dollop of the Curl Mix flaxseed gel to each section, remembering the section at the back of your neck as well.
  4. Take your fingers and scrunch up to remove excess product and follow with a t-shirt.
  5. If you have curly hair and have applied the curl mix leave in conditioner or any other leave in, styler, apply this gel next in “Praying Hands’ method.

  7. Scrunch up with your fingers and then with a tshirt to remove excess gel.
  8. Plop with a t-shirt or start diffusing your hair. You can also air dry.

  10. Voila! Ces’t Magnifique, if I might say so myself 😛

Curl Mix Results with products

Pros

  • This is like the superman of flaxseed gels. It’s absolutely yummy in terms of the curl-enhancing properties & so natural!
  • It does not have any ‘baddies’ – no drying alcohol, no silicones making it CG Friendly too
  • Hand-made, Vegan, Cruelty-free & Organic
  • No pthalates, sulphates, parabens, formaldehydes
  • PROTEIN FREE! Which makes it great for low porosity curls or anyone who is sensitive to proteins.
  • Minimal ingredients – not a huuuuge list with names you can’t pronounce or find lurking in the toxic scale.
  • SO SO SO slippery. This is also because of Marshmallow Root Extract which is a very popular detangler.
  • Flaxseed gel is rich in omega 3 and leaves hair shiny.
  • Encourages curl clumping WITHOUT the hard, crunchy cast. This is for soft-touchable definition & weightless curls.
  • This is also great for finger coiling
  • Aloe Vera Gel & Organic Rosehip Oil are both moisturising and great for damaged hair.
  • Xanthan Gum gives hold.

Cons

  • This is not for hard hold (Don’t expect it to give you a hard cast, it’s not made for that. This is flaxseed gel we’re talking about) Doesn’t mean my curls don’t last for me but!
  • Nothing else, this is a really good gel.

Best For

Anyone with waves or loose curls who find their hair gets weighed down by leave in conditioner and curl creams and want something lighter but curl enhancing. This is also great for curlies who want volume with definition without a scrunchy cast.

Very useful information with adequate details, thank you. I’m considering buying both these products but they both contain glycerin, which might not work in humid weather conditions for some curlies. Do you by chance leave in a place with high humidity? Or, were you able to test your results in a humid conditions? Thanks.

Nice post! I wonder how you feel this gel compares to the Arata gel? The Arata gel has given me the best hair days of all gels I’ve tried, but after a terrible experience with the Kayos Botanicals Flaxseed Gel, I’m curious about how well the CurlMix gel is. Is there a cast? Even if it is a light one it works, since I’ve found my hair likes a cast in order to be frizz free
