It’s winter in Delhi & besides hating how this season makes me feel mentally and physically numb, it also affects my curls. The plunging temperatures has made them drier & rougher – two weeks of being sick with a cold didn’t help. I could afford to only wash them once a week & my curls definitely suffered. I knew that I needed to give it some much needed TLC but my favourite deep conditioner, The Bodyshop Rainforest Hair Mask was over and the new ones I tried recently weren’t any good.
So I turned to an easy hack- making my deep conditioner at home! Not only does it save me money, it’s easy to whip up with fruits and ingredients you have lying about in your kitchen. Its how I survived on a small budget in college and when I just started working. Even now when I’m not being lazy, I apply natural, home-made masks to nourish my curls.
This time, I added a yummy, buttery ingredient known for it’s super moisturising capabilities & another ingredient that has been a part of my childhood as long as I can remember.
Little did I know, this hair mask was everything my curls avo wanted. Infact, I’d go as far as to say I was coconuts about this creamy deep conditioner. After the results I saw, I olive this DIY hair mask & will do this more often. Believe me honey when I say these ingredients belong together!

Who is DIY Avocado Hair Mask For
Anyone of ANY hair type suffering from dryness that refuses to go and is dealing with a lot of frizz. This DIY hair mask is great for those who are particular about putting chemicals on their hair & want something natural instead.
To reduce dryness which leads to frizz, breakage, split ends & loss of shine. This in turn helps in healthy hair growth. Anyone with clogged scalp can also benefit from this hair mask.
Ingredients of DIY Avocado Hair Mask
This is not a local Indian fruit yet you get ‘desi’ avocados in INA market, New Delhi. You can also get them from Foodhall. The flesh is soft & buttery & is packed full of nutrients like potassium (2x Bananas), Vitamins like A, B6, D, E. It has high levels of protein and antioxidants. All of this is easily absorbed into out scalp, hair shaft. A mask with this will add shine & tame frizzy waves or curls.
Note: Making this a part of your diet will be more beneficial for your health. Topical treatments will work as long as your overall health & nutrition is great.
Coconut Milk or nariyal ka doodh has protein, Vitamin C, niacin and folate, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, copper, manganese, zinc, and selenium.It can improve blood circulation in scalp which in turn helps in healthy hair growth. The Vitamin E & omega-6 fatty acids moisturise the curls when used to deep condition.
I’ve used store bought coconut milk but if you want to make fresh coconut milk at home, simply grate a fresh coconut & add it to a blender. Add water to make a thick paste. Squeeze out the liquid with a cheese cloth or ‘channi’ & it’s done!
A powerhouse of moisturising ingredients! More than just being a dietary staple for health conscious folks, it is a handy oil for people with textured hair. It is composed of more than 70% Saturated & Monounsaturated fat with Omega-6, Omega-3: 0.76%, Vitamin E and Vitamin K. So adding even a few drops to your deep conditioner will up it’s moisturising capabilities. Remember that if you have low porosity hair, this can be heavy for you. Switch to a lighter oil like Jojoba or Argan instead.
I don’t like honey in my food (there, I said it. I don’t like the taste.) but apart from it’s great medicinal properties, it is great for hair. It can soften the hair (natural emollient), work as an antioxidant (healthy scalp) & a humectant (prevents loss of moisture). It’s highly antiseptic & antibacterial properties can also help against an infected scalp. Here too, if you can get natural honey (my mom has several bottles stored), it is better but you can also use a store bought one. I use a little of both since my store bought one hardly had any left!
- Clarifying Shampoo (Can use sulphate free shampoo as well)
- Blender (Machine blender works better)
- Deep Conditioning Cap/Shower Cap
- T shirt
- Denman Comb/Brush
How To Prep
Clarify your hair with a shampoo (I used Pantene lively clean, a silicone free shampoo with sulphate to remove previous buildup). You can use a non sulphate shampoo as well. Use your conditioner (currently testing Matrix Biolage Hydrasource Masque) to detangle gently & remove any knots. I find detangling once before putting a hair mask makes it easier for the ingredients to coat and penetrate hair strands. Remember to rinse out the conditioner completely.
DIY Avocado Hair Mask Recipe
1. Mash 1 avocado in a bowl to remove any lumps.
2. Add a tsp of olive oil. Add less if your hair gets easily weighed down by oil.
3. Add 1 tbsp of honey.
4. Add coconut milk to get it to a runny texture. You can add less to make a thicker paste and more milk to make a thin paste like I did here. *rolls eyes at self for this absolutely obvious piece of info*
5. Blend to smooth. Remember, if there are lumps in your hair mask, it will be difficult to remove them. Blend as smooth as you can.
6. This how the final mix should look like!
How To Apply DIY Avocado Hair Mask
On wet, freshly washed (shampooed+ conditioned+detangled) hair, smooth on the hair mask on different sections of your hair.
Use your fingers to detangle first & then use a narrow comb/denman brush to distribute the natural deep conditioner well throughout your hair.
Tie your hair into a bun & cover it with a shower cap or a heat cap. Doing this or light steaming helps the hair mask to penetrate the hair strands deeper. This step is especially great for low porosity hair.
Leave the avocado hair mask on for 20-45 minutes & rinse it off well! Be careful that you don’t leave any lumps on your hair.

Results of DIY Avocado Hair Mask
Do you see the shine!? I’d felt how buttery avocados were when I was mashing them in the bowl & that definitely revived my curls. It was smooth to touch & felt deliciously moisturised. The only thing I would have improved would be to add an essential oil that smells nice next time!
Honestly, it depends on how often you can afford to buy good avocado. I know it isn’t available in most cities in India. I get mine from INA market or food hall. You can also substitute this with bananas, works quite well too! But if it’s easy to get for you, twice a month is fine.
I don’t know if there is anyone allergic to avocados but if you are, please don’t try this mask, haha! Substitute the fruit with banana instead. Also, if you are low porosity or have loose curls/wavy hair- be very careful with the amount of oil you use. You can also use a lighter oil like Argan or Jojoba instead. (I can’t stress this point enough!)
